I love second-hand shopping. I remember when I was in high school I’d spend hours combing through my local Good Will looking for treasure. These days I mostly shop at luxury consignment stores because if you know what you’re doing you can build the wardrobe of your dreams on a thrift store budget.
Also, it’s fun! When I scored this Alessandro Michelle designed Gucci cardigan for $150 and it was probably the closest I’ll get to knowing what it’s like to win the lottery.
When your shopping at a high-end consignment store there is a good chance the clothing you are looking at has never been worn. My new cardigan still had the tags on it from the Gucci store. You just have to be ready to hunt and look regularly to find magic.
So here are my tips…
These are the spots I shop the most: Vestiaire Collective , Luxury Garage Store, and Tradesy.
If you’re not wearing it sell it. Every season I go through my wardrobe and reassess it. If it’s not something I still love or wear, I sell it. Then I use the money to refresh my wardrobe with things that feel more current to me.
Don’t let a label trick you into buying something you don’t love. So what if it’s Balenciaga? If it’s not something that works with your current wardrobe, you see yourself wearing regularly, or just makes your heart beat a little faster then skip it.
The price is always negotiable. Don’t be afraid to haggle. If a button is loose or a thread is out of place use that to ask for a lower price.
Enjoy the hunt!
